Glimpses of Our Past

Glimpses of Our Past is a community photography exhibition that invites us to look back, remember, and rediscover the people, places, traditions, and everyday moments that helped shape our communities.

A single photograph can open a window to another time. It can bring back the familiar storefront on the corner, a beloved neighborhood landmark, a family celebration, a first day of school, or a street that looks completely different today. These images are more than snapshots—they are pieces of our collective memory.

Spanning photographs from 1900 through 2000, Glimpses of Our Past creates a captivating visual timeline of life across Long Island, the Five Boroughs, and New York City. Together, these photographs reveal a century of change, growth, celebration, and everyday life.

Each photograph has a story to tell.

Yet, Glimpses of Our Past is about more than photography. It is about connection. It will celebrate not only photographers, but also families, historians, collectors, archivists, longtime residents, and community members who have preserved visual treasures. Many of these photographs have lived for generations in family albums, boxes, attics, drawers, and personal collections. By bringing them together, Glimpses of Our Past will transform individual memories into a shared community story. This exhibition will show how our neighborhoods have evolved, and how much or how little things have changed over the course of a century. The images will remind us that history is not only found in textbooks and archives. It lives in our homes, our streets, our businesses, our schools, our celebrations, and in the photographs we choose to save.

Glimpses of Our Past will invite you to pause, look closely, and discover something familiar—or perhaps something entirely new.
