CAROL ROSENTHAL

Carol Rosenthal is a life-long Long Islander, and retired scientist with a desire to explore the creative side of life.

Artist Statement:

I cannot remember a time in my life when I did not have a camera in my hands. I've always been curious about the world around me, wanting to capture the changing seasons and how they influence the light, colors, and gestures of our natural environment. After many decades of shooting, utilizing many different formats, I am and forever will be a student of photography.

ROBERT VERBECK

Rob Verbeck started taking pictures in 1974, using the Kodak 110 Instamatic that he begged his parents to buy him for my 10th birthday. Over time, he progressed through a series of better equipment, but for most of his life, he saw the camera only as a tool to chronicle life as it was; trips, special occasions, family events, etc. (and as a tool for avoiding social interaction at such events). Always having fun with his cameras (and having always loved taking pictures just for the enjoyment of doing it), Rob never considered those cameras as a vehicle for his artistic expression. Eventually, he came across the work of photographers Ruth Orkin, Robert Frank, Duane Michaels, Elliot Erwitt, and Bernice Abbott. Awed by their artistry, he still looked at what they did as something completely alien to what he was doing or ever could do.

As an elementary school teacher, Rob loves helping his students get past their own roadblocks. (“I’m not good at math,” “I can’t write well,” “I’m not a good artist,” etc.). He enjoys showing them that we all have many seeds inside of us that can grow and thrive if we recognize and water them. It took a long time, but with encouragement from his wife and from other photographers and artists he's met, he began to apply those lessons toward his photography. While still feeling slightly uncomfortable using the word artist to describe himself, he embraces that discomfort as part of his journey.

Artist Statement:

As a photographer, I enjoy working within and around numerous genres − street, landscape, nature, abstract, etc. The images I exhibit reflect that variety, but share a common element. On one level, evincing calm and quietude, each is also intended to convey a sense of being unsettled or restless − a feeling of moving toward or clinging to something radiant and ephemeral − of chasing the light.
