JOHN CINO

About John Cino
John Cino is a sculptor, curator, and educator. He received a BA in Fine Art from Stony Brook University (1982) and an MFA in sculpture from CUNY Hunter College (1985). Highlights as a sculptor include the installation of Nereid on the Mississippi River waterfront in Dubuque, Iowa; artist residencies including Stony Brook University and the East End Arts Council, and two consecutive NYSCA Long Island Creative Artists Grants in 2013 and 2104. From those grants, John first extended his work into public art with Library at Babel: Patchogue and then into multimedia performance with Common Ground. His work has also been exhibited in sculpture parks, museums, college campuses, and lobbies, including the Islip-MacArthur Airport. After working predominantly in the medium of wood carving since 2006, a 2022 retrospective exhibition at Iona College had reawakened interests from earlier in his career. In late 2022, he began working on a new body of work, both moving forward while looking back to works of the 1980’s and 90’s.
Artist Statement:
As a 12-year-old, I convinced my parents we needed The World Book Encyclopedia. There was not a topic within those volumes that did not interest me. On reflection, influences on my work are as varied as the many branches of human inquiry. A (most likely, partial) list of fields that have provoked my imagination includes biology, geology, physics and mathematics, archeology, anthropology, language, literature, music, mythology, and religion. The current works begun in late 2022 revive techniques of texture production developed in the 1980’s. The works fall into two series, Topographies and Elementals. Topographies are built from layers of plywood. Elementals are constructed by folding Bristol board into complex polyhedral forms. Revisiting old ways of working is not merely coming “full circle,’ for I am not the same person I was forty years ago. Or am I?

LISA STANKO

About Lisa Stanko
Lisa began painting at the age of ten and continued her art education through High School. As an art major in college, she gained inspiration from a diverse combination of classes and informative professors. Learning to look at things differently gave her the freedom to experiment and develop her own style. After working in advertising and raising a family, Lisa began creating artwork again. She has been fortunate to have sold
paintings and has participated in countless exhibitions on Long Island and in California, including the Biennial at the Heckscher Museum of Art. Solo shows at Daniel Gale Sotheby's, The Copiague Memorial Library, Jack Jack's Coffee House in Babylon, and The Calling Bell in Huntington. This new exhibit, "Ebb & Flow," is the first duo-artist show for Lisa. She is thrilled to be sharing a space with sculptor John Cino. Their shared passion for bright colors will be a feast for the eyes.
Artist Statement:
My entire purpose for painting is to achieve the wonderful feeling of excitement and joy. I am totally focused on my canvas. The only decision made before beginning is choosing the color palette. I immediately dive right in. Applying paint with gusto as the brushes create shapes, texture, and movement. It's an amazing journey as every piece takes on a life of its own. The music moves me while bold strokes and contrast take over. Multiple techniques and tools add diversity and interest. My goal is to show depth and vitality. If just one person's reaction is "Wow", my soul is content.
