The Light by Holly Hunt
Self-Portrait Photograph
23.5x17.5
Two days after my mother’s passing, I fell into a dark place and began traveling and exploring with my camera to escape my grief. Every day for a year, I yearned to immerse myself in anything and divert my attention from my sorrow, completely unaware of what might unfold when I finally paused to reflect on those feelings. My photography served as my escape, with avoidance becoming my muse.
During this period, I captured this self-portrait, “The Light”, in an abandoned “Old Ladies Home,” a sanctuary for unwed mothers—a place of concealed choices, children... and light. Upon returning home, I noticed the setting sun’s glare on the image. This was my sign to stop hiding from the inevitable, and to confront my grief, begin to heal, and rediscover my light. This image reveals a profound truth: that even in our most challenging and darkest moments, beauty and light can still emerge.
