Peek-A-Boo Moon by Bernadette Puleo

Mixed Media (Naturally dyed Indigo silk, stamped Indigo leaves on clear tape, indigo stems, and glass beads)

18x24x7

What says light from darkness more than the moon shining through the trees? When I look out my window, I see the moon peeking behind the trees. This piece is my interpretation of that scene. The background is indigo dyed silk/hemp fabric in which I used a shibori technique to create the moon. The panels of indigo dyed chiffon, covered with indigo leaf prints and indigo stems obstruct the moon, creating a peek-a-boo effect. The moon is there to guide us through the darkness even if we have to play peek-a-boo with it.

About Bernadette Puleo:

I am a lifelong graphic designer/textile designer with an MFA in Visual Communications.  I have been growing Japanese Indigo for many years, but since my retirement in 2020, I have committed my skills and energies exclusively to this plant. Starting from seed, I grow it (Persicaria Tinctoria), extract the pigment, and then use the pigment in various ways. Indigo, its pigment, leaves, and stems have become the basis for all the craft and artwork I create. My fiber art work has been exhibited at the Huntington Arts Council, Art League of Long Island, Islip Arts Council Gallery, BAFFA Gallery, and  Bayard Cutting Arboretum. I also participated in an invitational at the AVA Gallery in Astoria, OR.
