Ghosts by Margaret Pesco Schultz
Mixed Media
13x36x25
The spaces in between pose the most interesting questions in my mind, especially when it comes to storytelling. In my art, I seek to explore personal narratives that drift on the periphery of consciousness, somewhere between dreams and waking life, between memory and fantasy, and between light and dark. I seek to present those fragments to the viewer and have each person lend their narrative to bridge the gap. The materials in this quest vary. I frequently use mixed media as a means to explore the juxtaposition of concepts. In this case, in the series Ghosts, portraits emerge from the rust, not quite fully realized. Is the corrosion a result of time, or is it intrinsic to who they are? The context and relationships between the images are deliberately left open for the viewer to interpret.
About Judge Margaret Pesco Schultz:
Margaret Pesco Schultz is a mixed media artist whose work explores the tension and dialogue between opposing forces—light and dark, memory and fantasy, permanence and decay. Rooted in personal narrative, their practice navigates the spaces in between: the liminal zones where dreams meet waking life and where meaning is often ambiguous. Central to this exploration is a fascination with juxtaposition—both in concept and in material. Delicate and industrial elements coexist; corrosion and clarity are layered together to evoke a sense of fragmentation and unresolved memory.
She holds a BA in Fine Art and Anthropology from Kenyon College and an MFA from Ohio State University and has exhibited in group shows throughout Long Island, including at the Long Island Museum, the Mills Pond Gallery, MOCA L.I., and the 2nd Avenue Firehouse Gallery.
When she’s not in the studio, Margaret teaches High School art classes and runs the William’s Warriors Foundation, bringing art therapy to children undergoing cancer treatment.
